As research becomes increasingly data-driven globally, the demand for fast, secure, and reliable digital networks is surging. Many research and education communities struggle to access the connectivity and services needed for seamless, secure data sharing and international collaboration across virtual research teams. Ensuring secure and inclusive digital access remains a challenge, especially in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. With this in mind, under GN5-FPA, the EU-funded GN5-2 project will deliver high-speed, cost-effective connectivity, scaling up to terabits per second where needed. GN5-2 will support services, foster knowledge, and expand access beyond traditional users to include emerging technologies such as quantum, time and frequency, and fibre sensing. Furthermore, it will strengthen Europe’s digital backbone and services, empowering researchers and students around the world.
